Online Meetings, Virtual Training Sessions, or Real Time Meetings? What is Better?
With training courses on the rise, and following the pandemic outburst, meetings have been designed in a practical way so that trainers and trainees can adapt and engage in the best possible way. In fact, up to 90% of corporations use a form of online learning today, compared to just 4% back in 1995. It has also been predicted that the virtual learning market will grow another 8% by 2026, and to add to this, the international online learning market is projected to be worth $325 Billion in 2025.
Companies such as IBM have saved almost $200 million due to the switch to online training, but despite all these benefits, let’s take a look at the disadvantages of online meetings and training sessions. Although it is so easy to get online at a touch of a button, it can be quite isolating without having a physical presence.
What About Online Coaching?
With online coaching sessions, you move beyond geographical locations, by connecting with top coaches either through Skype or any other online platform, such as MS Teams, Zoom, Google Meets, and more. Being in a virtual environment allows you to talk to your coach, and your trainer can still communicate with you.
Online sessions are favourable for some learners because they are a convenient and an easy way to access information anytime. Learners can study at their own pace, it is cost effective, and it can be tailored to learners’ individual needs. Online coaching is also unrestricted and you can get immediate updates, allowing learners to effectively manage their time.
What About the Personal Touch?
Despite all the benefits stated, there are quite a few limitations of online coaching and training sessions. Some people might need that personal connection with the trainer in order to learn. The trainer may also be limited to having a whiteboard, and if you want to ask a question, you need to wait your turn and the trainer may easily miss you putting up your hand virtually.
Real Time Meetings and Training Sessions Are Real!
Real time training sessions give more intimacy between the trainer and the learners – it may be impersonal to have a virtual session and nothing replaces the human contact. It’s so difficult to develop relations from behind a screen.
Facial expressions and body language convey a great deal of information, and unconscious communication cues help to facilitate discussion. These cues can be missed or lost entirely when a meeting is held virtually. This makes online meetings more difficult and increases the possibility of misunderstandings.
Interpersonal communications take up a huge part of our lives. Face to face communication is the most complete type of communication for work, relationships and in most situations.
There’s nothing like face to face communications.
Co-Creation
Yes, you can send files back and forth, but to really create something, you need to spend face to face time to share ideas and collaborate. When creating complex tasks, or co-writing songs, or coworking with team members, it is most effective face to face, especially in the initial stages.
Building Relationships
Face to face communication solidifies relationships, and makes it real. The real turning point is when you finally meet face to face and create shared experiences, shared history, and shared meaning in a shared environment. This would be difficult to do if the relationship stays online. In person, people are more courteous in their communication, and are more careful in how they say something to the other party.
Collaborative Problem Solving
When building solutions through brainstorming sessions, there is something almost magical about bouncing ideas back and forth in a real time meeting room that creates something new. Training sessions that are done in training rooms usually require certain equipment (such as a whiteboard) to facilitate communication, and training providers appreciate seeing their attendees face to face as it encourages brainstorming that may be difficult to conduct if done online. A real time meeting or training session is usually conducted in a free flowing style. After all, virtual breakout rooms and raising your hand virtually can be quite a distraction.
